Ink Jet Q&A
The Process of Refilling Inkjet Cartridges

Mechanics of Ink Printers and Cartridges
Prior to understanding the process of refilling an inkjet cartridge, there are technical mechanics of the printer and inkjet cartridge that should be learned. Originally, ink jet cartridges were intended for single use, only.

Although there is not a definitive fixed number of times a cartridge can be used, it can be refilled until the cartridge wears out. The number of cartridge usage varies from cartridge to cartridge. Usually, a cartridge can be recycled between 4-10 times. But, it is contingent upon the condition of the cartridge.

In recent ink jet news, manufacturers have found that the cartridge heaters continue to do their work and the nozzles continue to discharge ink beyond single use. Essentially, the heaters on most cartridges will work until they weaken significantly or burn out completel. On average, it occurs between the third and fifth time the cartridge is used.

In most cases, the circuitry and the print head perform the majority of the work on an inkjet printer. Rarely, are these installed in the printer. However, they are actually contained on the small inkjet cartridge.
There are 48-320 nozzles (jets) on a print head. In general, it is located at the bottom of the discount inkjet cartridge.

The nozzles are thinner than a human hair. All are connected electronically to a heater (or resistor). The resistor actually heats and cools the ink inside of the cartridge. A bubble forms whenever the ink is heated. The bubble bursts when the heat source is removed. Then, it creates dots of ink. As a result, fonts and print characters are formulated on paper at rates of 6,000 drops/per second.

The Process of Refilling Inkjet Cartridges
Although the process of refilling inkjet cartridges may seem tedious, it is very simple. The most popular/standard cartridge is the Black HP 51645A. On average, maintaining one cartridge takes, five minutes. It involves the following 7-steps:

Head cleaning solution: 15 seconds
Cleaning/recovery of ink: 30 seconds
Refilling the cartridge: 10 seconds
Priming: 25 seconds
Cartridge testing: 120 seconds
Re-labeling the cartridge: 35 seconds
Cartridge packaging: 120 seconds
Approximate Total refill time: 5 minutes and 55 seconds
